Bambu Lab H2D Powers Sofia Rousinovich's Zero-Waste 3D Sandals

Kyiv designer Sofia Rousinovich used a Bambu Lab H2D and ultra-soft 75A TPU to 3D print fully wearable, supportless summer sandals in one flat piece.

Fashion Meets Fabrication

Sofia Rousinovich is not a typical maker. Armed with a master's degree in fashion design and years of AR work for global luxury brands, the Kyiv-based designer turned to desktop 3D printing as a hands-on creative outlet — one that lets her translate digital concepts directly into wearable objects.

Built Under Extraordinary Circumstances

Sofia's path to owning a 3D printer was far from straightforward. After the escalation of conflict in Ukraine in 2022, she relocated temporarily to Europe, using that period to teach herself 3D modelling from scratch. She later saved up for a Bambu Lab H2D and waited over six months for it to reach Kyiv through complex cross-European logistics — spending every evening in the meantime studying slicer settings, material properties, and CAD geometry.

Engineering a Supportless TPU Sandal

The centrepiece of her latest project is a fully wearable sandal printed as a single flat piece — no supports, no post-processing assembly required. Key design highlights include:

  • Material: Ultra-flexible 75A Shore hardness TPU for maximum foot comfort
  • Supportless geometry: Optimised bed adhesion and bridging eliminate disposable support structures, cutting both print time and material waste
  • Integrated breathability: Geometric cutouts across the upper promote airflow during warm-weather wear
  • Zero assembly: The sandal comes off the print bed ready to wear

Why It Matters for DIY Fashion

By engineering around the constraints of flexible filament printing, Sofia demonstrates that zero-waste, high-concept footwear is achievable on a desktop machine. Her work challenges the notion that sustainable fashion requires industrial equipment — and proves that creativity, not factory access, is the real limiting factor.
