Formlabs Silicone 40A Resin lets you 3D print 100% pure silicone parts in-house, skipping costly molds and labor-intensive casting workflows.
A New Era for Silicone Part Production
Producing soft or flexible parts in low volumes has traditionally meant expensive tooling, slow lead times, and complex casting processes. Formlabs addresses this challenge with two complementary approaches: direct silicone 3D printing and 3D printed rapid tooling for molding and casting.
Introducing Formlabs Silicone 40A Resin
Silicone 40A Resin is the first accessible 100% silicone 3D printing material, powered by Formlabs' patent-pending Pure Silicone Technology™. Unlike flexible photopolymers, it contains no added monomer or acrylate — it is true, pure silicone. Key mechanical highlights include:
- Shore A hardness: 40A
- Elongation at break: 230%
- Tear strength: 12 kN/m
- Thermal range: –25 °C to 125 °C
- Minimum feature size: 0.3 mm
Parts can be printed in hours, with isotropic properties and complex geometries that traditional casting simply cannot achieve.
Typical Applications
The material suits a wide range of industries. Common use cases include seals, gaskets, and dampeners for automotive and robotics; wearables, grippers, and handles for consumer products; and customized prosthetics or medical devices requiring biocompatible flexibility.
Rapid Tooling as an Alternative Path
For teams that prefer traditional molding, Formlabs SLA printers can produce accurate molds for injection molding, compression molding, casting, and overmolding. The four-step workflow — design in CAD, 3D print the mold, fill with silicone, then de-mold and post-process — keeps tooling agile and cost-efficient for low-volume runs.
