The most common failure in FDM printing is a first layer letting go mid-print, which costs the whole part and all the hours in it. A sheet gives a more even surface than glue applied by hand, which is always thicker in some places than others, and parts release more easily once the plate has cooled.
A sheet survives many prints. Replace it when the surface picks up deep scoring, when air bubbles form underneath, or when first layers stop sticking the way they used to — that last one is the usual sign the surface is spent.
