3D design software for 3D printing: which one to choose
Start with Tinkercad — free and browser-based. For precise parts use Fusion, Onshape or FreeCAD. For organic shapes such as figures use Blender or ZBrush. All of them export STL or 3MF for your slicer.
Design software and slicers are not the same thing
Design software creates the shape and exports a model file such as STL or 3MF. A slicer converts that model into the toolpath your printer follows. You always need both.
Common slicers are Bambu Studio, Orca Slicer, PrusaSlicer and Cura for FDM, and Chitubox or Lychee for resin. All are free to download.
Options by type of work
Choose by the work you do, not by how complex the software is.
- Tinkercad — free, browser-based, learnable in an hour; good for teaching and simple parts.
- Autodesk Fusion — free personal licence, parametric history you can edit later; good for parts that must fit together.
- Onshape — fully browser-based; the free plan makes documents public, which suits teaching and collaboration.
- FreeCAD — open source, free for personal and commercial work, no vendor lock-in.
- Blender — free, excellent for sculpting figures and art, not for dimensionally exact parts.
- SolidWorks and Rhino — commercial packages widely used in manufacturing and product design.
Design rules that print first time
A well-designed part saves a lot of reprints.
- Make walls at least twice the nozzle width — 0.8 mm or more for a 0.4 mm nozzle.
- Overhangs steeper than roughly 45 degrees from vertical need support; designing them out saves material and time.
- Allow 0.2–0.4 mm clearance on mating parts, since printed features come out slightly oversized.
- Orient parts so loads run across the layers, because a print is weakest along the layer lines.
- Export 3MF where possible — it preserves units and colour and avoids scaling surprises.
What if you cannot model?
Download a ready-made file and rescale it, 3D scan a real object to get a starting mesh, or bring a sketch to a branch and talk it through with the team.

How powerful does my computer need to be?
Ordinary part design runs on a normal laptop. Blender and high-resolution scan data need more RAM and a better graphics card.
Can I print a STEP file directly?
Most slicers accept STL, OBJ and 3MF, so convert STEP first — every CAD package can export those formats.
Can free software be used commercially?
FreeCAD and Blender can. Fusion and Onshape free tiers carry commercial-use limits, so check the vendor’s current terms.
