Free 3D models: where to download them and how to print them
Free 3D models come from public repositories such as Printables, MakerWorld, Thingiverse, Cults3D, Thangs, MyMiniFactory and GrabCAD. Files are usually STL or 3MF: open one in a slicer and print it. Always check the licence before any commercial use.
Where to download free 3D models
Each repository has a different strength — picking the right one saves a lot of time.
- Printables (by Prusa) — high file quality with reviews from people who actually printed the model; strong for functional parts and printer upgrades.
- MakerWorld (by Bambu Lab) — many files ship with ready-made print profiles and pre-configured multi-colour jobs.
- Thingiverse — the oldest and largest library, but quality varies; check user photos of real prints first.
- Cults3D and MyMiniFactory — free and paid files, strong on figures and art.
- Thangs — search by shape, useful when you need something similar to a part you already have.
- GrabCAD — engineering CAD files for machine parts and fixtures.
Read the licence before you sell a print
Free does not mean unrestricted. Most repositories use Creative Commons licences with explicit conditions.
If you plan to sell prints or use them in client work, check for an NC (non-commercial) term — if present, contact the designer for permission.
- CC BY — commercial use allowed with credit to the designer.
- CC BY-SA — allowed, but derivatives must carry the same licence.
- CC BY-NC — no commercial use; personal printing is fine.
- CC BY-ND — no modifications to the file.
- Standard Digital File License — site-specific terms, read them case by case.
How to spot a file that prints well
A model that looks good on screen is not always easy to print. Look for these signals.
- Photos of real prints from several users, not just renders.
- The designer states print settings: layer height, infill and whether supports are needed.
- Large models are already split into parts that fit a normal build volume.
- Avoid steep overhangs with no support guidance, and walls thinner than your nozzle.
From file to finished part
The workflow is the same on every machine; only the software names change.
- Download the STL, 3MF or OBJ (3MF preserves units and colour best).
- Open it in a slicer: Bambu Studio, Orca Slicer, PrusaSlicer or Cura for FDM; Chitubox or Lychee for resin.
- Pick the material and printer profile, and check the part fits the build volume.
- Preview layer by layer, check supports and print time.
- Send the job to the printer over Wi-Fi or a memory card.

Frequently asked questions
STL or 3MF — what is the difference?
STL stores only the surface as triangles, with no units, colour or material. 3MF stores units, colour, material and placement in one file, so it suits multi-colour jobs and avoids scaling mistakes.
Can I sell prints of a free model?
It depends on the licence. CC BY allows commercial use with credit; anything marked NC does not, and you need the designer’s permission first.
The file will not print — what now?
Usually the mesh is not watertight or the walls are too thin. Try the repair function in your slicer, scale the model up slightly, or pick a version other users confirm prints correctly.
What if the model I want does not exist?
Design it yourself in a free tool such as Tinkercad or Fusion, or 3D scan a real object and edit the resulting mesh.
Do downloaded files work with any printer brand?
Yes — model files are not brand-specific. What is machine-specific is the toolpath file your slicer generates afterwards.
