From PPE and VOCs to disposal and skin sensitization — here's what you need to know to print with Formlabs resin safely.
High Performance Doesn't Mean High Risk
A common misconception in the 3D printing community is that safer materials must sacrifice performance. Formlabs challenges this idea directly: it is entirely possible to engineer high-performing resins without cutting corners on user safety. Understanding resin safety is really about understanding and managing risk — not avoiding resin printing altogether.
Always Wear Gloves — No Exceptions
Liquid resin, regardless of the brand or formulation, should always be handled with nitrile gloves. Uncured resin is a skin sensitizer, meaning repeated exposure over time can trigger an allergic reaction. If skin contact does occur, wash the area thoroughly with soap and water. The good news: Formlabs resins are formulated so that a respirator is not required for normal use.
VOCs, Odor, and Workspace Setup
Resin odor does not directly indicate toxicity — a resin can be odorless yet still emit VOCs, or smell strong without being hazardous. Always consult the Safety Data Sheet (SDS) for your specific resin to determine ventilation requirements. Formlabs Alpha Resins are a standout here: they use low-odor components and are the first 3D printing resins to earn UL GREENGUARD Gold certification for low VOC emissions, when used with the Form Studio 1 and VOC Extractor.
Cured Parts, Washing, and Disposal
Once fully cured, resin parts are generally safe to handle without gloves. For washing, IPA (isopropyl alcohol) is the standard solvent, though alternatives exist. Never pour uncured liquid resin down the drain — it must be cured under UV light first before disposal according to local regulations.
How to Find Safety Information Before You Buy
Every Formlabs resin comes with a publicly available SDS covering hazards, handling procedures, and recommended PPE. When evaluating any resin, always locate its SDS first — if a manufacturer cannot provide one, that is a significant red flag.
